As we near the end of the summer season, I wanted to pass along my thanks to all who have participated in feedback and oversight on the work conducted this year to help reduce the Filamentous Algae outbreaks in 2019.
For me, Lake Blue Heron has not looked better than it has this year for more than 4 or 5 years, perhaps longer. I believe the core reason for this is a positive, and forward thinking treatment plan formulated by Charlie Mesing and adjusted as the summer progressed. My sincere thanks to him for this effort.
Charlie’s work would not be possible without the significant management and financial support of the Killearn Lakes Homeowners Association and the Golden Eagle Homeowners Association. The boards of both organizations worked together to bring forth a common solution set that clearly has helped all homeowners of both organizations (on and off the lake) to preserve and protect their home values.
Please consider taking a moment to send an email to the Boards to let them know how you feel about the lake’s treatment progress this year. I realize there will be some that would like to say “no chemicals.” This is a goal we are interested in pursuing. But it was only through very carefully managed chemical treatment that the lake algae has been largely diminished this summer season — and the weather has not been that helpful (heat and sparse rains promote algae growth). It should be noted that the Bass and Bream populations have never been stronger. We are regularly seeing 4 to 5 pound bass being caught and released, young bass in the under 1 pound are numerous, and the bream schools are tremendous throughout the lake. This helps bird populations, and other lake resident animal populations (rabbits, fox, deer, and many more).
