With Spring fast approaching, there are some IMPORTANT considerations that all KLHOA homeowners should consider when planning to fertilize their yards. Nutrient “spillage” is one of the greatest harms to our lakes. Please consider the following brief tips — the link at the bottom will take you to a very nice full explanation of these tips. These are in priority order, with the first being the most important consideration.
- Choose a fertilizer that has no phosphorus — middle number:
Example: 32-0-25. - Clean up yard debris — ensure it does not enter the street drainage system! Grass clippings and leaves are the most destructive if they reach the lakes.
- Utilize a “slow-release” fertilizer — your yard will “green” a little later, but will last longer and less nutrients will flow to the lakes.
- Apply “half” the recommended amounts — your yard will still green and you’ll save money! If you must apply the recommended amounts, do it in two sessions several weeks apart.
- Please clean up after your pets — it’s the friendly thing to do for your neighbors, but more importantly, these highly phosphorous rich deposits will not leach into the lakes.
