Today, the Killearn Lakes Homeowners Association and Golden Eagle Homeowners Association implemented the final Algae Control spraying for 2018. While the algae is not visible to the casual observer as it has submerged due to cooler weather, it is still present and needed treatment. Charlie Messing conducted the spraying and surveyed the lake for other treatment needs. He determined that we are beginning to see some intrusive plants in some areas and will be working with Killearn Lakes HOA on establishing a plan for treatment should they reach a concern level. This final spraying was made possible, in part, through funds donated by lakeshore residents of Lake Blue Heron as the algae growth was quite high this past summer.
The Friends of Lake Blue Heron committee has worked with both boards and has received a commitment to maintain a higher level of treatment through 2019 and 2020 in hopes of having less filamentous algae presence during the summer months. We will likely see at least three treatments in 2019 as a result of this commitment, with the first being much earlier in the year to try to get a jump on minimizing the growth cycle.
