As promised, the Killearn Lakes Homeowners Association has completed a second round of Filamentous Algae treatment on Lake Blue Heron.
At the direction and recommendation of Charlie Mesing (our lake management engineer), this treatment was designed to largely focus on the shoreline and shallow areas of the middle of the lake. The results are quite promising.
It is HIGHLY desired for the lake-shore residents to continue to minimize lawn fertilizer treatments — Minimize — means use the correct amount of fertilizer for the square footage being treated, resist putting fertilizer within 30 feet of the shoreline, wait for no rain, and water only enough to apply the fertilizer, and use a fertilizer with a ZERO (0) in the middle number (Nitrate). Many have decided to avoid fertilizer if possible — especially in the summer months. In addition, more homeowners are adding vegetation to the lake shoreline in an effort to capture nutrients before they enter the lake.
If KLHOA members (all in the watershed — a lot of homes — 3000+) do this over time, the nutrient levels in the lake will improve (decline) and it will take less effort to treat the algae blooms. Please help spread the word.
Please be aware that these treatments are TEMPORARY patches and are only capable of minimizing the visible algae for a period of 4-6 weeks. Charlie will continue to monitor and recommend treatments as appropriate.
